Real edit: I've just confirmed that you do not need Steam installed at all to play Starbound on a PC, you only need Steam to grab the latest updates when they come out.
Great news for me as this means I can play at work off my flash drive on slow nights, hopefully the rest of you find this helpful as well, and I'm not just regurgitating common knowledge!įake edit: Yes, this means the game is super easy to pirate, but isn't the point of piracy to refuse ridiculous prices and restrictive DRM? As starbound has neither of those if you do use this to get yourself a free copy from a friend and you like the game, don't be a dick, pay your $15! :)
Just as an FYI, while you will need to launch Steam to download the latest updates as they come out, you can directly run Starbound.exe in steam\steamapps\common\starbound to play the game without any need to have Steam running or, as best as I can tell, any need to even have Steam installed.
